[Free Framers] ANN: FrameMaker and DITA2Go

Many Framers are either considering migration to DITA, or have already migrated (often using Mif2Go to do so). At that point, there are two ways to proceed: 1. Continue using Frame as your editor, and as a way of producing good PDFs. Most people in this group use DITA-FMx, far superior to native Frame DITA support, and also inexpensive: <a href="http://www.leximation.com/dita-fmx/">http://www.leximation.com/dita-fmx/</a> 2. Use an XML editor like oXygen (my favorite): <a href="http://www.oxygenxml.com/">http://www.oxygenxml.com/</a> Or Syntext Serna (which has a free edition), XMetaL, Arbortext Epic, or XML Mind (free). In either case, the tool with which most DITA users produce outputs like HTML and Help is the free DITA-OT. However, the OT, while good for a POC, is not quite up to commercial needs. So we've developed a new tool for this, based on our popular Mif2Go product, called DITA2Go. DITA2Go is a Windows application that converts DITA source (ditamaps and bookmaps) to all the following output types (which Mif2Go supports): * HTML and XHTML * Word RTF * WinHelp * HTML Help * JavaHelp and Oracle Help for Java * Eclipse Help * Cross-platform FOSS OmniHelp * DocBook * Generic XML * DITA (to produce specialized topic types) PDF output is still in development. The DITA2Go Project Manager GUI creates and runs conversion projects. You can edit simple configuration files to customize every aspect of output. A Configuration Manager GUI is in development. DITA2Go produces the equivalent of 200 to 500 print pages per minute, enabling a quick workflow of run, check, edit, rerun. A DITA2Go license costs $US 295 per seat, with quantity discounts starting at 5 copies. This includes support and all upgrades for the first year, renewable at $US 75/year. DITA2Go is available free to the unemployed, underemployed consultants, academics (students, faculty, and staff), and all FOSS developers. Current Mif2Go licensees can purchase DITA2Go and renewals for it at 50% off. Alternatively, if they migrated to DITA and no longer need Mif2Go at all, they can migrate to DITA2Go at no charge. Under View > Color > Definitions,  I see the whole offending list of colors that I was being warned about on Friday. I thought that I would just be able to select each offending color and click Delete, but the Delete button is not available for these colors. (and next to Ink Name, the word "None" is displayed and is grayed-out.) OK, so I tried saving the file as a .mif, and opening the .mif to delete the colors, but same issue - the Delete button is grayed out and the Ink Name is None. I am stumped. It didn't. It can't. The problem comes from one of two other graphic types, either EPS, or a PNG using a color map (rather than 24-bit color). You could make it go away by replacing the EPS with a PDF, or changing the PNG to use 24-bit colors. >shouldn't I be able to >keep different color definitions for different templates? [Free Framers] RE: Printing to PS and distilling to PDF question

A few comments about this issue: (1) The Adobe PDF PostScript printer driver instance used to create PDF explicitly by printing or implicitly by the FrameMaker "save as PDF" feature has a special option in its "driver plug-in" component labeled "Rely on system fonts only; do not use document fonts." This option is accessed as follows from the "Adobe PDF" printer: Adobe PDF=>Properties=>Advanced (tab)=>Printing Defaults=> Adobe PDF Settings (tab) as well as from: Adobe PDF=>Properties=>General (tab)=>Printing Preferences=> Adobe PDF Settings (tab) Both of these areas need to be set the same way although usually, setting via the Printing Defaults method sets the Printing Preferences (but don't count on it!). (2) The function of this option is (supposedly) very simple. If the option is enabled, the driver does not put any fonts into the PostScript stream to be distilled. Why is this important or useful? It turns out that the PostScript generated by the Windows PostScript driver, PSCRIPT5, and especially the inclusion of fonts in that PostScript stream, is optimized for consumption by a PostScript printer, not for creation of PDF. The driver includes incrementally downloaded font fragments which is not optimal for the Distiller and could cause problems later in a workflow when trying to merge PDF file fragments together. When this option is checked on, the driver puts no fonts in the PostScript; the Distiller itself finds the fonts and puts them into the PDF file in a more cohesive, organized manner. (3) There are situations, however, that cause problems The first of these situation is when fonts are passed through to the driver by what is known as the driver "PostScript escape mechanism." This is the means by which EPS (or by extension, PDF) placed in a FrameMaker document is passed through the driver to the final PostScript stream and many such EPS (or PDF) files have embedded fonts which are then encountered by the driver. In FrameMaker 9, if you don't use the RGB option for the "save as PDF" feature, FrameMaker's UNIX PostScript generator (the entity responsible for creating CMYK PostScript) also embed fonts in the PostScript stream it in generating. In either case, if the driver senses these fonts being passed through when the "rely on system fonts only" option is enabled, it throws up (guess that's a good way of putting it) the error message requiring you to turn off that option. (4) The second problematic situation is that of applications that privately install fonts. There are two examples of this. Microsoft Office application documents have the ability to carry embedded TrueType and OpenType (TrueType flavor only) fonts if and only if such fonts allow full embedability. When Office applications open such documents, they privately install those embedded fonts for your use while editing the document. Similarly, if you try to print a font sample for a font that isn't installed on your system (i.e., you double-click on a font icon and print from the font preview presented by Windows), the font preview function temporarily privately installs the font. The nasty however is that, privately installed fonts are passed through Windows GDI and the driver (resulting in their embedding in the PostScript stream), but cannot be seen by the Distiller which is run in a separate system process and cannot access (or even know about) the privately installed fonts. In this situation, you don't know what's going on until you get either a Distiller warning or error (depending upon you joboptions). (5) There is a known bug in the Acrobat updater that totally resets all your printer settings for the "Adobe PDF" PostScript printer driver instance every time you update Acrobat. These days, in order to stay ahead of the hackers, the Acrobat group at Adobe has been issuing updates on an almost monthly basis which means that every time you update Acrobat, you had better follow that with resetting all the "Adobe PDF" settings to your own preference. That includes the default joboptions used for the distillation process. A) copied to the clipboard. When Rev. A is done, change all those revisions to your Rev. A character tag or format before beginning the next round of revisions. The new revisions will have only change bars. If you need a third round, you could repeat the process using a Rev. B character tag/format. The find/change process could be scripted, of course. HTH! Hi Wayne, Thanks for doing the research, but this is to change existing frames & content. ImpGraph does this (partially -- doesn't do the rules and content position -- for NEW imports. Maybe somebody here on the list can comment on this. There was a tool called ImpGraph that did this sort of thing. The link I had for it is dead (the site is no longer valid). Anybody remember that tool and if it did everything Art's looking for? It was a PC only tool, and not of much interest since at the time I was using FM on the Mac (RIP...). [Free Framers] Global changes to Anchored Frames?

Has anyone run across a plug-in or FrameScript that applies the same set of global properties to all anchored frames in a file or book? I'm working on a legacy document and I need to change all anchored frames to have a 1 pt black rule, right align, have the same width, and be set to Below Current Line. Bonus points for setting the graphic inside to 0/0 offset. (ImpGraph does some of this for newly imported graphics, but this is applying changes to existing frames... more of a global S&R operation.) Note that the location of the PPD files described in that old posting (C:\WINNT\system32\spool\drivers\w32x86\3) certainly does not match the location for current Windows versions. For Windows Vista and Windows 7 64-bit versions, look in C:\Windows\System32\spool\drivers\x64\3 For Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7 32-bit versions, look in C:\Windows\System32\spool\drivers\w32x86\3 Also, especially in Windows Vista and Windows 7, you may need to muck around with file permissions and ownership (implying that you run as an Administrator equivalent) before the system will allow the file edits and deletions I describe. Your client doesn't actually have Times and Helvetica installed on their system and some remaining fragment of text or graphic in their documents are calling upon a face of Times and/or Helvetica. Hello Framers, I am trying to help a client with a problem. Here is here setup: FrameMaker 7.2, Acrobat 7, and Windows XP. Her documents originally used Times and Helvetica, but we substituted Times New Roman and Arial. When she switches the printer to the Adobe PDF printer and tries to print or open one of the FM documents, it says that Helvetica and Times are missing. When she switches back to her HP printer, she doesn't get the missing fonts message. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks. Hello, In summer/fall 2008 there were 10 Framemaker 8.0 licenses installed. Since then, three people have left. And now, there are three new people, but none of the original license information for those three. How is/is it possible to retrieve missing license information for Framemaker 8.0? Is there criteria that Adobe accepts as proof of purchase and can then provide the license information the IS/Accounting/Purchasing departments say that they do not have? [Free Framers] Project management tool?

Hi, We are a small group of three technical writers writing reference documentation using Framemaker and producing PDFs. In short, the workflow consists of the senior technical writer commenting a specification written by a developper (do, don't, see example, etc), the tech writer writes the documentation, and that goes through a review process (developer, peer review, final review). The resulting documentation is added to the official document set. I am looking for a tool like a relational database that will serve as a front end for this simple project management. It will hold the comments for a specification, permit tracking the status of specifications being documented, allow keeping track of the time spent on documenting each assigned specification, see what tasks are assigned a tech writer for a given period, track estimated vs real time for a given project. There are also other projects of a non-documentation nature (translations, copy editing for other depts., etc.). I currently use an Excel spreadsheet, a table in FrameMaker, comments directly made in the specification PDFs... and as a group this is getting difficult to follow and upkeep because of the different tools being used. We do not have a great volume of information so capacity/size of data bases is not a problem. Our developers use TestTrack Pro to track defects/solutions. It gave us the idea of how we could integrate our different tools into one that is easy to set up, easy to customize, and made setting up filters, automatic notifications, and report generation quite easy. <div class="ecxSection1"> Hello Fellow Framers,   I need as many opinions as I can get on several PDF to Word conversion tools.   BACKGROUND INFO   I use Frame 8.0, structured, XP, Acrobat 9.0 (TCS1). I have a huge project, hundreds of documents, plenty of content reuse opportunity, lots of graphics (years of work). Have successfully setup a solid EDD and template that emulates the documentation standard look and feel.   BUT, I am the first and only writer here using Frame; all others use Word. Word has been the expected format when the documents are transitioned out of R&D. The end users get PDFs, but file control wants content in Word for their final say and maintenance going forward.   Project manager and product champion both agree that Frame was and still is the right choice, but we expect to run into strong headwinds upstream. We�re going to push for change, but I have been asked to look at options for a fallback plan. I will continue to author and produce the initial documents in Frame and deliver via PDF, but down the road, we could convert to Word at handoff if we lose the battle.   WHY PDF TO WORD and not FRAME to WORD   I am already exploring the options to convert from Frame to Word (via Frame�s export option and via Mif2Go). I will post separately if I have further questions on that option. Since I have the only Frame license here, I�m concerned about adding an extra process to my plate, if we can somehow shift the work to other resources and still get acceptable results. Cost is also a deciding factor.   I have heard a few things about the following products:   -          NitroPDF -          PDF Converter Pro (is this the Nuance product?) -          PDF Converter 6 (is this the same as above or something different?) -          Solid Converter PDF -          ABBYY PDF Transformer 3.0 (can�t download a trial?)   I also found these:   -          123 PDF to Word -          PDF Converter 2009 -          Smart Soft -          InvestIntech -          Able2Extract 6.0   So, HANDS DOWN, which ones are the best and which ones should I forget about trying? How much experience does this group have with NitroPDF and ABBYY Transformer 3.0. And are there any Acrobat 9.0 compatibility issues with these tools? Hi Mike, If you add some other characters to your searches, you could do this in several passes. For example, to get the open quotes, you could do this: <space>" where <space> is a space character, and replace with open quotes. Then you could use this to find any that might be at the beginning of paragraphs: \P" Now, the rest of them in the document/book should be closed quotes, so you can find " and replace with closed quotes. Verner, So you basically want to copy the table column widths from one table to another without changing anything else? FrameMaker itself has Copy Special > Column Width (often forgotten) for a single column. I seem to remember Rick used to have a script available which copies and pastes all column widths... or a full automation, of course. Another option to ease the finishing process would be to search for irregular line ends in table cells. The result was that a letter or two wre placed in line two of the column. I fixed this in the files I received from the translator but would like to fix it in my English source so that I won't have to do this again in the next release. <div class="Section1"> I forgot to clarify - yes, I did create a new blank RH project before I tried the import and there were no errors in my FM file. Long story short - after rebooting, and starting FM and creating a small FM primer file with just a few paragraphs, I imported the primer file into a blank project and all was fine.
