Hi Mike,

If you add some other characters to your searches, you could do this in
several passes. For example, to get the open quotes, you could do this:

<space>"

where <space> is a space character, and replace with open quotes. Then you
could use this to find any that might be at the beginning of paragraphs:

\P"

Now, the rest of them in the document/book should be closed quotes, so you
can find " and replace with closed quotes.

Subject: [Free Framers] Replacing straight quotes with smart quotes

I'm scanning some out of print books and putting them into Frame to make use
of PDF functions. I end up with straight quotes.

I find plenty of instructions to go from smart quotes to straight quotes,
but I need to go in the opposite direction.

I can replace all, but that leaves me with half the quotes to fix - the
opening quote in a pair is OK, but the closing quote then is the same as the
opening quote.

How can I fix make the close quotes smart without doing each one manually?

I admit my skills are a bit rusty, so I hope I'm not asking an elementary
question.

Thanks for the help,

Mike
